Here are some crafts you can do with your
kids:
Ping Pong Ball Ghosts-you need paper towel, ping pong balls, glue, string, a marker and tape-Glue the paper towel to the ping pong ball but not the bottom-draw on the eyes-attach the string to the top with tape-form the paper towel that's hanging down to look like a ghost. Black Silhouettes-Use black construction paper or Bristol board and cut out shapes (especially people, ghosts and the grim reaper) and hang them in your windows. Tombstones-cut tombstone shapes out of Bristol board or Styrofoam-paint it grey in the middle and black around the edges-use a marker to write on the tombstone Iron fences-cut out iron fence shapes in black Bristol board and hang them around the perimeter of your room. and/or windows. Ghost Lollipop Party Favors-use fabric or tissue paper (white) to cover the tops of the Lollipops.-tie the fabric at the stick and paint on eyes to look like ghosts. One of a Kind Napkins-write Halloween inspired jokes in pen on white napkins. (Cannibal jokes are my favorite. See Misc. page for ideas. Adult Oriented Projects Murder Victim Outline-get someone to lie down on your floor and use chalk or masking tape to outline their body. (I outline my pets too). Signs From Hell-Use old wood to make direction sign pointing to strange things, such as “To Hell,” “Turn Back Now,” “Death This Way,” or whatever your imagination can conjure up.-Make them look old and distressed by sanding and staining certain parts, or if you happen to have a wood burning kit, pull it out and get creative. Paintings On Your Wall-replace the pictures on your wall with ones of gothic castles, real ghosts, freak show pics, or fantasy style gory or gothic images. You can also hang old tattered even blood splattered cloth over your wall paintings. Spider Web Table Cloth-you can use this at your kids party too. Take a plain white table cloth and use a black marker to draw spider webs all over the cloth.- You can cover it with blood and tear some holes in it too for a more spooky effect Your Furniture- cover your furniture with old sheets. (Try to find some at second hand stores)-This not only protects your furniture but adds to your creepy ambience. Shrunken Heads-you can do this with your kids too. (I like to add paint to them after for a more realistic effect. Its up to you whether you feel crafty or not.)-you need some apples ( I usually buy the small, cheap, Macintosh apples for this) I make a dozen or so, but you can make as many or as little as you like. You need 1/2 cup of lemon and 2 teaspoons of salt.-Peel the apples and use a small knife or potato peeler to cut out the large details of the eyes, nose and mouth. Don’t worry about the small details as they will lost in the drying process.-coat the apples with the lemon juice and salt and leave to dry on a wire rack, in a warm place. They will take at least a week to dry out completely. I usually do them at least two weeks in advance. Paper Mache (great for kids too!)-Mix flour and water until it’s sticky but not too thick. Add white glue if you wish. Use balloons and cover them with the Mache. Paint them, put wigs on them, do whatever you want, just make them scary. (Cover rubber for hands etc.) Police Tape-use caution tape to block off rooms and hallways you don’t want your guests going in to. It adds to the ambience and keeps your privacy. Frozen Hands-freeze different color of punch then the one you are serving, in a clear rubber glove. when its frozen, carefully peel off the glove and float in your punch bowl. (Make regular water ones for your ice trays and buckets!) Spider Web-along with the cotton webbing you buy from the store, hang white thread from your ceiling, to simulate spider webs, it feels creep when you walk through it. Bones and More--use oven bake dough from a craft store to make bones eyeballs and more. Bake them and paint them if you wish. Cute Kid Crafts-cut out bug bodies from construction paper (See stencils) and attach pipe cleaners for arms and legs and hang with string-get Styrofoam balls and paint them like eyeballs, hang from string or place a bunch in a bowl.-make spider bodies from construction paper. Use a hole punch to punch out eyes, pipe cleaners for legs and string through the eyes to make a garland. Kleenex Ghosts for kids-crumple up one Kleenex and wrap another around it, tie it with a string, draw on eyes. (You can also wrap candy in white material for cute treats for your trick or treaters.) Hanging Bats (for kids)-cut shapes out of construction paper (see stencil section). Attach five or six to a string and hang from ceiling. Window Dressings -use craft paint to draw on your windows. It washes off with soapy water, but test an area first to be sure. Bleeding walls-Squirt blood on transparent sheets (office supply store) and hang on your walls to make them look like they are bleeding. Fetus in a Jar-buy a small plastic doll from the craft store and fill a pickle jar with water, red die and a squirt of lemon juice. You may also add some red yarn for a more realistic effect. Mummy-Stuff an old shirt and pants with newspaper or other old clothes. -wrap it in cheesecloth that has been stained coffee or tea and dried.-use one of your paper mache heads and prop up in a chair or corner. Halloween Photos-leave a couple disposable cameras around so your guests can take candid pictures of your party. To Keep Your Fake Blood From Staining-smear the surface with petroleum jelly before you squirt the fake blood on it. This keeps the staining to a minimum and makes cleanup pretty easy (Do not squirt blood onto surfaces you will be upset if they get stained.) Bugs in the Ice-Fill your ice trays half full with water and freeze.-Add plastic bugs to the cubes, fill the rest of the way with water and freeze completely. Add these to your ice trays and buckets. Dry Ice-Dry ice is a lot of fun, especially if you can afford a fog machine. It can be dangerous so don’t use it around children as it severely burns skin. Put it in a place where your guest won’t stick their hands in it. You can obtain dry ice from party stores and freezer companies .Mix one gallon hot water to every 1-2 pounds of dry ice. It won’t fog unless the water is over 40 degrees Celsius, so you’ll have to add water every now and again Bone Crunching-spread dried bread crumbs and pretzels underneath your rug, when someone walks over it, it sounds like bones crunching. Buy cheapie dolls and parts from the dollar store and pull them apart. Make tray’s of “baby’s legs” etc. and and use paint to make the heads look decayed, use lot’s of blood!! Real Organ Jars-buy real organs from the grocery store (cows tongues and brains etc.) and put them jars of water. Mark them “experimant 1,2,” “Biohazard,” “Specimen 1” etc. You can also dye cooked pasta noodles red and mark as brains or whatever. Hang or display meat hooks near your jars, it adds to the scene. 7 Deadly Sins-use the 7 deadly sins a part of your theme. Find pictures or statues etc. that portray greed, gluttony, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath. I used transparent paper and wrote them in cryptic writing.
I came across this pretty cool site that features some pretty easy Halloween decoration projects. |
